Shelby Best with Best Face Forward Creations

Hey there! Lydia here. Welcome back to our She Knows Her Numbers Blog series!
This year, I really want to dive into the idea that you can understand your numbers. I thought the best way to show you this is to give you examples of real women business owners who are taking imperfect steps to know and understand their numbers.
This week, I’ll be featuring Shelby with Best Face Forward Creations! We met in high school and reconnected over Instagram years later. I’m so excited for you to get to know her! Her face painting creations amaze me! Without further ado, here is Shelby!
I’m a former accountant who has experience in non-profit accounting and for profit accounting. I put my career on hold after having my son. I had been working for a multi-million dollar company and realized the stress of working long hours for a company other than myself wasn’t what I wanted. I began face painting and took on jobs my sister in law (also a professional face painter) didn’t have time for. About 3 months in I branched out onto my own and created Best Face Forward Creations.
What accounting system do you use?
QBO (QuickBooks Online)
Do you consider yourself a natural numbers girl?
What are you doing to become more comfortable with your numbers?
Having a better filing system for invoices and purchase receipts! Being organized in my office turns into easy organization with my books!
How often are you checking your numbers?
1 x a month
Have you outsourced this? Give your bookkeeper a shout out!
What’s your best advice for someone just starting out in regard to their money?
Make sure your business money is separate from your personal money. That first sale, gig, or service needs to have a place to deposit and record keeping is so much easier with a separate account. And it makes you look PROFESSIONAL no matter how small your business is!
What’s your Starbucks order? (Just for fun!)
Grande americano 1 stevia, 1 sugar free cinnamon dulce, 2 sugar free vanilla
What report is most helpful for you to look at?
How do you stay organized?
A binder filing system by quarter (since we do 4-8 gigs a month and don’t have an overwhelming amount of invoices or expenses)
How do you make looking at your numbers more fun?
I am a data person. Running budgets, and checking numbers is fun by itself 😂
How can readers contact you?
Thank you for sharing, Shelby!!
