Working From Home, No. 8.

Tip No. 8

Today is tip no. 8 of this series! Today’s tip is probably obvious, but not always easy to do.

Tip no. 8 is the stay off of social media when you’re working, not necessarily for your business!

I know, you’re probably rolling your eyes. But, what I have found is that social media is great for my business. I love updating my Instagram and my Facebook page and liking other small business’ posts as well. I also have found community in some Facebook groups online of other female entrepreneurs doing the same thing that I’m doing. They are some of my favorite online friends and they’re always talking (except in January cause #allthetaxthings). I can find myself distracted on there for an hour if I’m not careful and then distracted by my personal page and all the fun things my friends and family are doing.

A few things that I have found that are helpful.

1. Deactivating your personal profile and creating a separate profile for just business. At least this way the personal things are not in site.

2. Scheduling posts on social media one day of the week so that you’re still posting, but not having to actually be on Instagram or Facebook during a work day. Grum is a tool that I’ve used and loved! This requires some planning ahead, but it is doable.

3. Evaluating if you need to be on social media for your business. I don’t know what your industry is or what you’re goals are, but does social media need to be in that plan? Would a website be sufficient? Is your target audience actually online? Social media seems like an easy way to grow an audience, but it does take work and you want to make sure you have a return on your investment.

4. I’ve yet to find a way to do this, but I would like to find a way to block social media throughout the day on my computer and my phone. Maybe it’s a little baby sitter like, but some days I need a little help with self-discipline. If I didn’t need the internet to run QuickBooks Online, I would just turn the internet off, but unfortunately, I have to have it.

What are your thoughts? Are you struggling with this at all? Leave me a comment!
